European Conference, Amsterdam ‘The Power of Older Refugees’
Last December 2008, LCN was invited by Age Concern England to accompany their Ethnic and Diversity Policy Officer who represented England at the European Conference of the ‘The Power of Older Refugees’.  The aim of the conference was to raise awareness about the position of older refugees, to show their power, and to introduce new creative methods to approach older refugee.  The intention was also to develop new actions across Europe to strengthen the position of older refugees on a local, national and European Level.  From the UK, the Conference was also attended by the British Refugee Council accompanied by a group of Ethiopia Elders who shared their experience.  LCN was invited to the conference following the organisation active involvement and participation with the two years Older Refugees Programmes 2006 – 2008 which was aimed at listening to the Voice of Older Refugees and finding ways of helping them ‘From Isolation to Integration’.

As a result of the European Conference, member state participants have come up with an Intergenerational Project which is to be implemented by each organisation in designated country while collaborating with members and the outcomes of the project will then bring us together to formulate and influence policy as well direct service delivery to older refugees across European.  This programme is to be funded by the European Social Fund which LCN has signed to it.
